Students Testimonials
I recently returned from studying in Cuernavaca with Miguel. What a great trip. He organized my stay around the cultural phenomenum of the Dia de los Muertos - a series of activities and events memorializing members of their families and communities who have passed on. I took classroom lessons every morning and excursions in the afternoons. Since my interest lies not just in learning vocabulary but what is behind the words - what are the customs, the feelings, convictions, thought processes, dreams, frustrations and hopes of those who share this world with me - this trip opened doors into the lives of warm, caring and thought provoking people of all ages and all walks of life.Miguel met me at the airport and took me to my host family, which he had carefully selected - finding a match that was ideal. Various members of my family were involved in holistic medicine, family therapy, environmental studies, founding and building a conference center for educational promotion of sustainable lifestyles. Another guest came from Cuba with a family background in high levels of government service in a socialist setting. She yearned to return to her childhood home in Guatemala. During various excursions with Miguel and his family, or with my host family, I shared meals with two lovely young school girls, a shamen, a national director for radio production, an indigenous matriach who lovingly formed tamales in her wrinkled hands as her *abuelita* had taught her - passing on the same methods used by her ancestors for centuries - carefully wrapping the corn meal dough in leaves and slowly cooking them over an open fire in a central common area shared by 5 or 6 families.Pedro, the night security guard down the street, had decided as a young man to head north to work in the US so he could earn a bit of extra income to send back to his wife and children. His dream was to provide just a few more opportunities for his kids than he had growing up. Finally, he missed them so much that he could no longer stand being away. The tragic irony is the price he paid. By the time he returned, his kids were heading north to repeat the process. The closeness of family ties was all he ever wanted. How was the economic crisis affecting Andres, the young taxi driver with a wife, a toddler and a three month old girl at home? Now instead of working 8 to 10 hours a day, he was putting in 12 - 14 hours just to make ends meet. His dream? Provide enough for his children to get the education he never got, so they could find professional work. Sound familiar? I share these experiences to let you know of the possibilities that can open up when you get into an immersion situation. Our conversations often lasted into the *madrugada* or wee hours. None of this can be learned from a book, or even from online classes. Classes are a good starting point, and highly recommended, as they will provide the foundation needed to reach the level needed to communicate about real life issues. In my study of spanish, I first reached the point where I could travel - asking directions, ordering a meal, buying tickets, reserving a room at a hotel. But I wanted to go beyond being a tourist. Over the last year, Miguel has helped me reach the next level. I am now considering organizing a group of others who would like to go back with me to Cuernavaca to study with Miguel and continue developing some long term friendships. If you have a similar interest, whether you are just beginning or at an advanced level, please feel free to contact me at the email listed on this site. Or if you just have questions about Miguel Velez, or other aspects of the program, I will gladly answer them.

The program is being handled by Miguel Velez and I think that he is probably one of the best Spanish teachers out there. I use Skype for my on-line lectures and I have noticed an unbelievable progress in my spoken Spanish within this period. He has a very detailed and well structured program to take you to which ever level you desire (Basic, Intermediate or Advanced) and the one-to one learning method ensures that the training is structured to your specific needs.I strongly recommend this course to anyone who really wants to learn Spanish. Definitely worthwhile

Miguel is an excellent teacher who became a good friend. In a month of intensive work, he took me from an advanced-elementary level of Spanish to a level high enough for me to do field work in Spanish. He has a wealth of knowleged about contemporary Mexican culture as well as Mexican history and indigenous civilizations. I highly recommend him as a teacher of language and culture.
